The first plums are ripe and ready for Picking at Bells Farm shop.
The first variety of Plums to be ready are the Opals.
They have a fabulous sweet taste and tender pale yellow flesh – just bite into them and watch out for the juice. Eating them fresh is a taste revelation. This is what home grown English plums taste like!
Pick them when they are a purply- pink and tender to the touch. As you are picking them fresh for yourself you can pick them really ripe as you don’t need to worry about the them being able to cope with packing and travelling to a supermarket. Your challenge is to make them last till you get home!
We grow several varieties of Plums so that you can pick them throughout August. We even have three varieties of Damsons.
The next variety of plums that will be available are delicious Victoria Plums which are seen as the ultimate English plum but we have other varieties ripening after that so try them and pick your favourite.
The later variety plums are Warwickshire Drooper which makes absolutely fabulous jam followed by Marjorie Seedling and Laxton Cropper and we also have Pershore Yellow Egg Plums.
Egg Plums will bring a nostalgic smile to some of you but for those of you that haven’t seen them these plums are a bright egg yolk yellow when they are ripe. They are ideal for cooking in a crumble but I can’t resist eating them raw.
Make sure you check our blog or Facebook for the latest updates to find out when each variety is ready.
