Damsons are ready to pick now – bringing back memories of childhood reciting “Tinker, tailor, soldier, sailor, rich man, poor man….” as you count the stones from your damson crumble!
We have several varieties of Damsons and they are all delicious in crumbles and pies. Damsons have a very strong flavour for their size and are used for cooking where their deep purple juice provides amazing colour and their sharp flavour provides an exciting contrast against sweet crumble or pastry.
Damsons are also great for making jam as they have a high pectin content so it sets well or try as a puree swirled into icecream ( try it with Bennetts clotted cream icecream) or even make some Damson Gin!
Damson stones tend to cling to their flesh so can take a little longer to remove than a plum stone. The easiest solution is to cook with the stones in and teach everyone the rhyme!
